Combining a robotic arm with a brain-reading robot, the researchers are helping to improve the lives of tetraplegic patients (those who cannot move their lower or upper body) to reconnect with the world.

During their tests, the arm could remove obstacles depending on the brain’s reading capacity. They have an algorithm that interprets brain signals using an EEG cap. The system determines which arm to move and which movement the brain considers incorrect.

To achieve this, the process involves using PEDOT, a conducting coating, on the brick samples. It then seeps through fired bricks, turning them into energy-storing electrodes.

Sweat Powered Smart Watches

The University of Glasgow is thinking more of a different super capacitator. Smartwatches use sweat from your body rather than electrolytes in normal watches.

With as little as 20 microlitres of sweat, your watch can charge enough to perform 4000cycles of bends and flexes common when in use.

The watch has a thin layer of polymer-coated polyester cellulose cloth in a thin layer. It acts as the capacitator’s electrode.

Through swear, the positive and the negative ions in sweat collide on the polymer surface. The electrochemical reaction is what generates the energy.

While batteries are cheaper and available worldwide, they feature toxic materials. They are not easy to decompose. Using sweat to replace them could create safe and cleaner energy. Professor Ravinder Dahiya, the head of Bendable Electronics and Sensing Technologies (Best) Group in James Watt school of Engineering in Glasgow, also notes that the toxic material is harmful when exposed to your skin.

Sweat is an opportunity to charge and discharge performance.

An entrepreneur and founder of the company Bio-bean has a solution for the problem. The company recycles coffee waste into biofuels. The company turns 85% of coffee waste into power for transport and heating for buildings. Their factory in Cambridgeshire collects coffee waste from small coffee shops, restaurants, and large chains.

The factory dries and processes the grounds to create logs, pellets, bioplastics, pellets for biofuel, and flavorings.

When cut into two, it turns into two worms. With the head cut off, the worm grows another. Also, when it undergoes radiation, it repairs itself. Using AI and some information feed, scientists know how the flatworm regenerates. Using 42hours on a computer at the University of Massachusetts, the AI solved the mystery of how genes allow the worm to regenerate.

Though fed with some material, it is a breakthrough in research. Further study could improve the capacity of computers.

The 10-Min Charge Car batteries

Charging car batteries can be a pain for many motorists. Most people give up electric cars because they take a long time to charge. Research is working on a solution to the problem by developing faster-charging batteries.

One of the major hurdles is that rapid charging degrades lithium batteries. Researchers at Penn State University say that charging ions in lithium batteries does not perform well under low temperatures and quick charge.

They also found that if the battery could heat up to 60° for 10 minutes and then cool again to ambient temperatures, it would not form lithium spikes. That also means the battery survives.

Their new model features a self-heating battery that uses a thin nickel foil. It creates an electrical circuit that heats in less than 30 seconds. Additionally, the car cooler cools the battery.

Neurons have long been like black boxes, according to Professor Alain Nogaret. But, this discovery shows that scientists have been able to peer inside. They have found a way to artificial neurons onto silicon chips. The neurons are similar to those in our nervous system and their electrical properties.

The work is a paradigm shift as this is a robust method to reproduce electrical properties in a short time.

The neurons only require 140 nanowatts of power. A microprocessor requires a Billion times that power. The minimal power requirements make the invention perfect for implants and interventions such as heart failure and Alzheimers.

Based on UN predictions, the world will have 2 Billion more inhabitants. That will put pressure on arable land. Also, many people will reside in cities. Most food will have to come from farms far away. Yet, the food could also come from floating farms on lakes or near the cities.

The floating farm concept by Architect Javier Ponce shows a 3-tier, 24m tall structure. The top tier has solar panels that provide energy. The middle has vegetables fed by liquid nutrients, and the rest feed fish in the bottom enclosed space.

One floating farm measures 350x200m. It can produce 8.1 tonnes of vegetables a year and 1.7 tonnes of fish.

A Russian scientist Sergey Zimov is on a quest to create a 12000-year-old environment in a park. The project will use herbivores like bison and wild horse. Along with them will be a replacement of extinct megafauna like mammoths. He will study the impact of animals on the environment.
